EFFICIENCY REQUIRES THE RIGHT SOFTWARE
CONFIGURATION
IT’S NOT ABOUT THE MOST POWERFUL
HARDWARE – IT’S ABOUT THE RIGHT ONE
Not every application needs to be accelerated to the
maximum. An overnight simulation run can take longer if it
consumes significantly less energy. In time-critical
applications like early warning systems, every second counts.
That’s why we support configurable software variants –
optimized either for performance or energy efficiency.
In a GPU-based flood forecasting simulation, for example, we
found that many daily model runs could be executed on a
single GPU – with clearly measurable energy savings. Only in
emergency scenarios did it make sense to use multiple GPUs
– despite the higher energy overhead from communication
and synchronization.
Real performance doesn’t come from technology alone – but
from using it wisely. This is exactly where we come in: with
analysis, tools, and consulting for a new generation of
efficient software in high-performance computing.
The development of EMA, EPS,
and RTV is funded by the BMFTR

NAAICE project (GreenHPC grant).
